Why do people keep saying that having faith is religious based?

faith /fe??/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[feyth] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
?noun 1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.
2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.

Yes some of the definitions of faith are religious based, but the first 2 definitions of faith clearly are not, in fact the ex refers directly to science

this is from dictionary.com

I have seen this statement several times from people, mostly when talking about evolution and having faith in a theory.
yes I know my question is grammatically off, lol, I am getting tired and need to go to bed soon!
