Why does everyone hate David Ortiz?

I personally don't hate him. I could never really hate someone that never directly did anything to me. Though I'm not a big Sox fan, I think Ortiz is one of the best clutch hitters in the game.

David Ortiz is a great player and I do not think many people hate him, or at least I don't know any. However, he is slightly overrated. He is a great batter, but he stinks at everything else. There is more to baseball than just batting. But you can't deny his abilty to put the bat to the ball, especially in clutch situations (not so much this year).

Manny Ramirez, however, is a whole nother story. He is cocky, aragant, and also is only good a batting. His defense is decent (at best) he only makes catches look difficult although for most outfielders they would be a peace of cake. Also all of his stupid antics are forgiven if not encouraged joust because he is Manny. They say "that is just manny being manny." Let me tell you that is a stupid thing to say. That is like saying that after Barry Bonds does steriods and hits a homerun (hypothetical) "that is just Barry being Barry." You can not be excuse for doing something wrong or stupid because of who you are and especially if you do it often, that should make it worse when you do do it. I know you didn't ask about Manny, but I just had to say that.

i dont h8, but i have to wonder if he's on steroids because of his size. critics have also labeled him as a one dimensional player. i wouldn't want ortiz on my team, although some people say he's good for keepig clubhouse spirits light and fun

Big Papi is the biggest teddy bear in baseball. I've met him a couple times and he has been nothing but nice and appreciative of all the fans. If people don't like him it's probably because they're a fan of another team that Papi has devastated with one of his walk-off home runs in the past. The guy was dropped from the Twins and comes to Boston and becomes the most beloved guy in the state, everybody here loves him. No need to be jealous...

How can you hate Big Papi? I'm a Yankee fan and I like him as a player. Of course when they're playing the Yankees I root for him to go 0 for the series and get hit by lightning. But, hey, its THE rivalry!

I'm not aware of a ground swell of Big Papi hate. Think of it, coming off a championship, David Ortiz is getting a much needed surgery immediately. He could have spent his off season partying, then wait until the eve of training camp to get his surgery.

Kinda like Shaq in 2002.

Instead of having a sense of entitlement, Ortiz is demonstrating leadership by taking care of himself now, in order to be ready for spring training.

I don't dislike the man - I dislike the fact that he was the starting first baseman in the all-star game. He is not a position player and did not deserve to be on the ballot.

because david ortiz has quickly become a very unlikable guy, he is the biggest threat on what is quickly becoming the most unlikable team in all of baseball, i cant get why people love the red sox so much, i dont really find any players, with the possible exception of jacoby ellsbury who really seem likable
the rest, they just come across as hired guns, they are out for the money, they dont care about erasing bad history for their ballclub, and they are just one obnoxious team
