Is the cold weather killing my "weed patch," or have I been infested with bugs?

When I bought my house, it came with a built-in "weed patch" in the back yard corner that the previous owners had failed to care for. (Was supposed to be either a vegetable or flower garden, cannot tell which.) I have been meaning to take care of that, but other things kept coming up with more priority. I figured it would be okay to leave it "festering" there until I could get to it.

A couple of days ago, I noticed that all the grass is now dead or dying. (It had gotten to about two-to-three feet tall.) Other plants there seem to be okay...

We have had a cold front hit the Houston, Texas area, and I haven't had to run my air conditioner for a couple of weeks now. Is the cold weather what's affecting the grass? Or, have I been infested with some type of "bugs" ?

I just wondered if I should move the "weed patch" up in priority at this time, or if it's still okay to let it go until later -- like when it's warm again!

Note: first-time homeowner, clueless.
I guess I better rephrase "weed patch." HaHa! (Got more people to read it, though, I bet! lol)
To "vtecpakiness," what I mean by "weed patch" is that Mother Nature has taken over a section of my back yard and the grass (NOT WEED), and plants (vegetables and/or flowers) are all growing wild and willy-nilly.

THERE IS NOT ANY "WEED" growing in my back yard! So don't go calling the authorities -- hahahah lol !!! No "MaryJane" here!!!

let it go....if everything else is still growing fine..more than likely the cold spell that hit was lower than the heat that particular plants needs to thrive

if it was cold enough to frost then the frost could have killed them.

Just tell people its a wild plant garden you have been nurturing for ages. Suprisingly most people will believe you

Anyway a lot of grass type plants when they reach maturity start drying off as they set seed
Dig out all big weeds and use a push hoe on smaller ones. In the spring allow weed to germinate and then spray with G360(Roundup ) Weed control will be an ongoing process, we have weeds called Fathen & Dock their seed can remain viable in ground for up to 25 yrs
Dont use pre emergence weed killer as this will affect any seeds you plant and can affect other plants

Dont worry about being a first home owner, all home owners were in their first home once
Its a learning experience and as you are asking shows you are prepared to learn, You will do alright
