| When will Microsoft make XBOX 360 without the Red Rings of Death and improve the quality of the system? Microsoft is in the process of manufacturing and shipping new hardware in all 360s. Codenamed "falcon", this revision includes the new 65nm processors and all new heatsinks. It is thought that the processors, besides being cheaper to make, will run cooler. Together with the new heatsink, this is hoped to reduce the amount of heat building up inside the system, causing the RROD problems.
When will 360s with Falcon show up? Good question. Microsoft won't say. Fans have already figured out that the Halo Edition of the 360 that were part of manufacturing batch 734 seem to contain the new hardware. However, there are also batches 732 and 733 which seem to include the older hardware.
The other models - Core/Arcade, Pro/Premium and Elite - will eventually use the same Falcon hardware as well, but it's really going to depend on how fast people buy up the older stock so stores are forced to use newer boxes. Everything I've read seems to indicate Falcon should be on shelves "sometime this fall".
You can be sure that when this does happen, it's going to be all over all of the 360 and video game-related websites, so keep your eyes open. I like http://www.joystiq.com myself as they cover all platforms, not just the 360.
Of course, the changes and improvements don't end with Falcon... There's already talk of Microsoft moving to even smaller/cooler/cheaper processors next Summer. While none of these changes will affect the 360's ability to play games at all, cheaper parts mean cheaper 360s for us. |
