please help me prove my dad wrong about notebook wireless cards!!!!!?

The notebook wireless card that comes with the dell deal from my college will work the same as a wireless card that comes with an HP. (not a special deal with dell)

My dad thinks that the wireless card with the HP might not work with the WIfi that my college has, but everyone should know that WiFi is Wifi and it will work with any wireless card.

The card with the dell is:
Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card

and the HP is:
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)

Not only is the HP card better, they are the same and they will work with any Wifi!!

Everyone please tell me who is right (even though I know its me) so I can get the HP!!!!
barrbou214 that would be a waste of time as I don't want to subscribe to Sprint. We have cingular.

From the multiple wifi cards that I have had they will work with any computer or laptop no matter the brand. It just gives you the ability to detect the wireless networks and then you just select it and sign on with the password if its protected.

Wifi is a standard communication protocol.

You can use the analogy of a telephone connection. Just because AT&T brings the telephone cable to your home, it doesn't mean you have to use a telephone provided by AT&T, you can use any telephone off the shelf from a store, similarly, any PC or laptop which has Wifi capability can access a Wifi network such as the one in your school or at any other place. All you need is the access rights to be able to do so, which are independent of the hardware.

All wireless cards work for all wifi net works. I have more then one way to hook up my laptop to the Internet through wifi networks not all networks will let you log in though so what you will need to do in college is get ahold of the IT person at your college and they can help you find the best way to hook up your computer. then there is also hooking up through your wall there as well. So You are right the wireless cards will work with different computers. Just as long as they are not internal ones. Sorry (to) Dad but your son is right to a point. External cards will do the job and internal ones well they are meant for that type of computer.

go to circuit city, best buy, radio shack or what ever your favorite computer resource store with ol' pops and have them explain the differences between the two wifi cards. when you realize they are both junk, then get a sprint/nextel card and you will never have to worry about being connected to the net again, ever. wifi is so yesterday.
