Post Officials say Sydney tar ponds should be buried

I read this and just had to share it.

The government's are saying the best way to clean up the tar ponds is to bury it.
They say the clean up is costing about $400 million and will take about 7 years.
Federal and provincial officials say "stabilizing and solidifying'' the ponds should not produce any adverse health or environmental affects.
People who live there are blaming the tar ponds on elevated cancer rates and other illnesses.
The tar ponds are about 100-hectares and will be constantly monitored.
They were caused by the steel mill dumping hazardous toxic wastes and sludge. They estimate that nearly 600,000 tonnes of contaminated soil is contained there.

I used to live in Sydney and you cannot walk down the road where the ponds are without smelling the awful stench. On a bad day you can smell it for a few miles. It is long over due the clean up of that site.
Should have been done years ago. I have to agree with the residences there about the cancer and other illnesses. I just am not sure that burying it is the best way to clean it up. I think it will seep into the soil of surrounding areas. But that is just my opinion.
