How far can a cat dog or bird smell with its nose?

I have two points to make.

1. Dogs are the best of the three animals mentioned. A bloodhound would be able to detect a thimble full of scent dropped out of a plane at 1000 feet over the Island of Manhattan(24 miles long).

2.What other organ would they use to smell with?

it's not really a matter of distance. It's a matter of number of scent molecules that can be detected.

I'm not sure of a birds sense of smell.

A cat has an average level of sensitivity about 7 times greater than a human. Which means that a cat can detect a much fainter trace of scent than we can.

Dogs on the other hand have a far greater sense of smell. I'm not positive of the exact amount, but I've heard some figures at 100 to well over 1000 times more sensitive. Bloodhounds maybe in the 10000 to 100000 times more.

Im not sure exactly how far off they can smell but we have a britt with a cold nose who it seems can smell something miles away and will track it until she finds it. Maybe a mile is an exaggeration but you get the idea.
