Why is my cable modem's IP address the same as my routers?

192.168.1.1 (or some similar variation) is the address to your gateway. In most cases your gatway is going to be your modem unless you have a router hooked up. This is common. If you want to access your modem you will need to hardwire it to a computer and use the IP address above. Without doing it this way you could not easily have a private network.

As for your problem. What I would suggest you do is to call up your ISP and talk with them about how to reset your modem. I just went though a similar thing where my DSL connection was geting 6 kb/sec as a max speed. Resetting the router fixed this problem (and should be done every once in a while). Your specific ISP will be able to help you with how to set up the modem for their network. If you have a CD you might be able to do it yourself, but I would still call them up and have them talk you though it anyway.

If you wanted to do it yourself you will need to make sure your modem is hardwired to a computer directly so basically you are taking your router out of the equation until your network is back up and running. Once that is done you should be able to reattach your router to your network and you should be sound as a pound.

Try resetting your modem. There should be a little button on the back that you press with a paper clip. Hold it down for 5 seconds or so.

Why is my cable modem's IP address the same as my routers?

Ok...here we go. Last night, I tried to install a wired Linksys router, so I could play Xbox Live as well as go on the internet on my computer at the same time. The router must be faulty, so I stopped trying to use it and just hooked the modem back up to my computer. It was working fine last night, but this morning, no matter what I do, the modem is coming up with the IP of 192.168.1.1, which is the default Linksys IP address. Last night, everytime I would just go back to the modem and hit repair, it would switch the IP to my ISP's choice, today, not so much. What the heck did I do? Just to add, I am a novice at computers and normally know how to fix things on my own. Here, I am lost. HELP!!!
Ok...some more detail. When I was getting it to run, hard-wired from PC to Cable Modem, no router involved, the IP address was something like 64.233.200.47 .........now, when I try to do the same exact thing today, it stays at 192.168.........it is beginning to make me angry. Could I have somehow made the router change settings in the modem? No matter how many times I refresh or repair the connection, it will remain 192.168. This is a strange instance. The router is definitely shot though, that's for sure.
