DSL timing out?????

Hello everyone. I'm having timeout issues with my new Cavalier DSL line. This is the scenario. My phone line was installed about 5 years ago in the upstairs of our home. I moved downstairs and drilled holes in the floor for the wires (instead of having DSL installed on the downstairs line). With my prior ISP I had problems so I switched to Cav and find out I am having the same problems. I basically have been using a 25ft RJ11 phone cord through floor to office and have connected everything (modem, ethernet and phone) where the computer is. I have that phone cord directly connected to the modem (no router). Cav's tech says get a longer Ethernet cord and leave modem box near phone jack upstairs. What do you guys think, would this solve my timeout issues? Anyone else ever been told the modem should be closely connected to the phone outlet jack. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!!

DSL timing out?????

i wasnt told the modem needed to be close to the jack but i was told that bunching all those wires near the modem would cause interferance and slow it down, which may cause a time out or the lovely "unable to display" page

DSL timing out?????

yes, the closer your DSL modem is to the MPOE the better. If you've got bad/faulty wiring after the MPOE this can cause the problems your seeing. As it is, if the line is clean up to the MPOE (minimum point of entry) it will be up to you to fix it, (or pay the phone company a tidy sum).

If you dial 611 they(the phone company, not cav) can do a line test to make sure you're not having other problems in the line. If the lines in the street are old this can also be contributing to your problem. Depending on where you live this can be the case.

And yah, so long as you are not more then 100M away from the DSL modem, your computer will be fine.

One other option, your PC is super infected w/ virii or spyware/malware and your bandwidth is being utilized in this manner..

Start by moving your DSL modem though as close to the jack as possible (w/in 6inches to 1 foot cable run). Dial 611 for a line test. IF possible, see if you can test by plugging the DSL modem directly into the MPOE (w/ an allen wrench you can typically open the phone company box etc..) and run a short cable directly from the MPOE to your DSL modem. This will tell you if the problem is inside wiring, or in the network, (or that third option w/ an infected PC).

Good luck on the quest, troubleshooting line issues is always fun..
