I would like to advertise my newly developed website aimed at those involved in the field of Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Where can I do these for free and what are the ways of making money from my site apart from using utilities like Google Adsense?

U can give flyers to restaurants and book stores to give them out to people. You must have investment in advertising as well.

submit your site into link directories. actually developing content is the best way to shout in internet.

because bots control the date of the documents too if your site shows it has unique content and shows itself building new content everyday. it will be seen in web searches.

making money with website is another issue. you can look www.cj.com and sign for some affiliation program there. but you should be carefull about choosing the category of your banners because in a bioinformatic website you could not sell ringtone I guess

Submit your site to any popular search engines like Google, yahoo etc. Don't forget to add some popular keywords so that people come across your site easily. All the best!

Who's your target audience. If its companies, you may try getting hold of their e-mail IDs and send unsolicited e-mails. If its science students, you may again send out flyers to colleges and universities.
But if you want to let the whole world know about it and that too pretty fast, you have to spend money.
You cant earn money from your site without investing in marketing it!
