Why is a food web a better description of feeding relationships in a community than a food chain?

A chain connotes a straight line from animal to animal, which is completely untrue and misleading. Prey and predator both excrete and those excretions support their own microenvironments. When considering the vast array of creatures that feed off of any given food source, the interrelationship of such a system reaches out in all directions to support many varied species.
