For hard coding, Notepad is the most common tool. But you may like to try Ultraedit www.ultraedit.com . This is much better as it has a feature to search for words and keywords and can accommodate a huge lines of code.
ultraedit looks nice, but what are people using for free editors? I'm a notepad kinda guy, man. used to use brief and loved it, probably should re-investigate it...
I also use dream weaver as well but for hand coding I use AceHTML PRo. I started out designing websites using the free version then bought the pro version.
I haven't worked on sites for a while but when I did, I used Notepad. Nothing is better, it's small, convenient and you can basically open anything with it.
